Religious Connection?
Parallels can be drawn between the character, Mary Margaret, and two important biblical figures, Mary Magdalene and the Virgin Mary. Mary Magdalene was a devout follower of Jesus Christ. She was present at two very critical moments in his life's journey - His Crucifixion and His Resurrection.
She has often been described as being courageous and brave, very much like Snow White in her defence of the villagers against the Evil Queen.
The Virgin Mary was the mother of the Biblical Savior, Jesus Christ. Similarly, Snow White/Mary Margaret, is the mother of the Savior, Emma Swan.
As shown in Figure 1, Mary Margaret is wearing a cross necklace as a symbol of her religious devotion.
The creators of Once Upon a Time had initially written Mary Margaret as a nun in the town of Storybrooke, however, this storyline was never pursued.
