      about Henry Mills

The Evil Queen

Regina Mills

Enchanted Forest

In the Enchanted Forest, this character is most commonly referred to as the Evil Queen. She is the most hated woman in all the land. However, she was not always evil. She was a caring young girl who saved the life of a small Snow White. The evil was created within her when Snow White betrayed her and when the Evil Queen's mother killed her one true love. From that moment, the Queen has done everything in her power to try to kill Snow White or to destroy every  last bit of her happiness. The Evil Queen cast a dark curse over the inhabitants of the Enchanted Forest sending them to a foriegn land where she is the only one who will receive a happy ending.

Storybrooke

The Evil Queen's alter ego in her newly created land is Regina Mills. She appoints herself the mayor of the town. When Regina arrived, she thought that her life would be filled with happiness; however there was something missing. She longed for a child. Regina approached Mr. Gold, who is Rumpelstiltskin in another realm, and asked for a child. He then found a baby boy, whom Regina adopted and named Henry. In this world, Regina controlled the lives of others and prevented them from living their happy lives.

Religious Connection?

The Evil Queen represents some of the 7 Deadly Sins. Some sins that are exhibited are envy, vanity, and jealousy. The queen is driven by envy. She tried to kill Snow White because she was prettier than her - watch video 1. The Evil Queen orders a huntsman to kill Snow White for her, because her hatred for Snow is so strong. The Evil Queen uses her magic mirror to gain advice about what she should do in regards  to Snow White. Mark Pinsky, the author of The Gospel According to Disney says the conversations that the Queen has with her mirror is sin.  He states, "self upon the throne is the tap root of all sin. From it grows pride, jealousy, greed, murder, and all other sins."

Much like the serpent in the Garden of Eden, Regina, tempts Snow White with a forbidden fruit, a poison apple.

The Evil Queen is willing to do anything to achieve her own happiness. This desire leads her to kill the person she loves most - her father. Watch video 2. The concept of murder is a sin.

The Evil Queen is known for ripping out peoples hearts and crushing them to kill the person. If the heart is not crushed, the person still lives, however, the Evil Queen can use it to control the person's life. The idea of this is morally wrong. In The Gospel According to Disney, Mark Pinsky quoted Bronislaw Malinowski who said that magic "is an attempt to manipulate spiritual forces so that the supplicant gets what he or she wants, whereas in pure religion the individual surrenders to spiritual forces (i.e. God) can do through him or her what those forces desire."

Although, the Queen was and is evil, she is on the journey to redemption. After her evil curse is broken, she and the inhabitants experience another curse and face adverstities. During these times, Regina helps the residents and tries to do good, for her son, Henry,  and ultimately for herself. Watch videos 3 and 4. Redemption is a strong symbol in religion.
